Pattern Making
In pattern making, I learned how to create garment patterns from basic blocks and transform design ideas into accurate templates for construction. I developed skills in drafting, measuring, and adjusting patterns for fit and proportion. I also learned how to design and assemble patterns for jackets, coats, and dresses, while exploring how to pattern sculptural designs and incorporate structure to enhance the form and silhouette of a garment.
Understanding pattern making is essential for my goal of becoming an assistant designer. The technical skills I learned allow me to translate design concepts into precise templates that ensure accurate fit, structure, and proportion. By mastering techniques like drafting, draping, and adjusting patterns, I can effectively support the design and production process, turning creative ideas into garments that are both well-constructed and visually refined.
In today’s fashion industry, understanding pattern making is key to transforming creative designs into well-constructed garments. Pattern making provides the foundation for fit, structure, and proportion, allowing designers to bring their ideas to life with precision. These skills ensure each piece is accurately developed from concept to final construction, supporting both creativity and technical excellence in the design process.
Project: Denim Sculpture Dress
Description: A one-of-a-kind look made entirely from recycled blue jeans, featuring an asymmetrical, sculptural top and a full paneled skirt. The design explores structure, balance, and form through creative pattern manipulation. This piece was showcased in The Blue Paradox fashion show at the Museum of Science and Industry.
Skills Demonstrated: Pattern drafting, draping, structural design, upcycling, and fabric manipulation.
Visuals: Process sketches, muslin tests, flat pattern layouts, and runway photos of the finished look.
Reflection: This project strengthened my understanding of how pattern making can shape both structure and style. I learned how to use pattern drafting to sculpt form, control volume, and turn sustainable materials into a refined, architectural design.
